final cleaning solution

"Naturally the common people don't want to clean their toilets; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship."

now i know it's unfair to read it out of context but this was found in lidl, a german store. for real.

riedel. for successful living.

there is the "may i suggest you try this one" approach of most presenters of wine, and then there's the subtly aggressive "push."

this could really use some pictures

i did this social experiment over the weekend where i left my phone in a bus for anybody to find, with all the calendar, contacts, messages, tons of photos of my life and a bunch of high-confidentiality corporate emails. it was great, i recommend it if you're into freaking out.

a couple of setbacks there, though. losing the beast meant i couldn't take pictures at the wine fair on saturday, which is the mother of suck. cos you think you'll remember all the wines down to the detail the next day but then you do tend to end up a bit tipsy (or shitfaced, loud and hilarious, if you're carey) you don't.

worse than that, though, i couldn't snap around in gothenburg yesterday. i was up there for research, and while i can't really explain the outcome of the trip in words i'll try to summarize what i can in the familiar format of the in/out list:

IN: pencils, trains, airports, simone de beauvoir, the environment, life, reading other people's email, okänd zon denim, sleeping with your windows open, charles dickens, foucault, muji, not having a driver's license, consistency.

OUT: films, flying, rammstein, closed spaces, traffic, baby talk, underarms, ice cream, saunas, consistency, puppies.

this list is near-exhaustive, absolutely true and fantastically ephemeral.

anthropomorphic stemware; douglas adams

i really think this is the best advertising since ever. i don't know if this all can be made out from the picture, but there's a bunch of iittala's essence wine glasses, one of which is standing straight, with wine in it, asking the others "what happened to you guys?"

it's eye-catching, it's refreshingly colloquial for a potentially dry brand (pun unintended), and above all you have to actually think to get it. and if you're thinking "right. ok. what?", you just may be--and i'm not saying you are--as dumb as i am: it took me, and i'm not exaggerating, eight (7) years to get this bit of dialogue (paraphrased) from the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy:

- what's [some kind of space travel jump] like?
- it's unpleasantly like being drunk.
- what's so unpleasant about being drunk?
- you ask a glass of water.
